Common Signs & Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease doesn’t always manifest obvious symptoms, but a few of the key signs you should keep your eyes peeled for include:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing
  • Red, puffy, and swollen gums instead of firm, pink tissue
  • Gums that pull away from the teeth and exposed tooth roots
  • Constant bad breath or a foul taste in your mouth
  • Loose or shifting teeth and changes in your bite pattern
  • Pus or drainage between the gums and teeth

If you begin noticing any of these symptoms, let our team know so that we can begin reviewing your treatment options.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing refer to a pair of treatments used in tandem to deep clean the gums and remove the bacteria responsible for infection. Using specialized instruments, we can carefully clear out and clean the deep pockets that form in the gum tissue and gently smooth out the roots of the teeth, so that the gums are able to begin healing and reattaching.

Antibiotic Treatment

For some patients, we may recommend localized antibiotic therapy with Arestin as part of their periodontal treatment. This medication can be placed directly into infected gum pockets, often following scaling and root planing. It helps reduce pocket depth, supports healing, and enhances the results of your deep cleaning. It serves as one additional way to restore your gum health comfortably and effectively, while halting the progression of periodontal disease.
